SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- "Middle of Florida, rainy-monsoon seasons."
But this isn't Florida It's the drip drop days of racing season.
On Broadway, people are trading in the fancy hats for umbrellas.
"We just drove up from Providence, Rhode Island to play golf at Saratoga National at 3 p.m. and then spend a wonderful day at the racetrack," said one visitor.
This group will be exchanging its clubs for shelter.
Up and down Broadway, there are a few choice words for this weather.
"Blah, blah, blah,” one person said.
"Hey if you're a duck, it's perfect," said another.
It’s been a wet start to the track season. The Spa City has seen more than its share of rain in the past few days. Heavy downpours have taken their toll and turf racing had to be canceled for two days. As our Dave Detling reports, the weather is the one thing people aren’t betting on.
It's a soggy start to the start of track season. We've got a little bit of road flooding, nothing major, and fans say they're going to take whatever Mother Nature throws their way and run with it.
"Instead of coming downtown, people were dodging puddles and flood zones," one person said.
Christel MacLean co-owns Circus Café. Along with other businesses in town, she's seeing fewer customers. She's hoping the weather won't slice into sales.
"I think the weather definitely has something to do with that but today we're off to a good start and the weekend is supposed to be great weather. So, hope the best," MacLean said.
At the newly constructed Hampton Inn, management also wants good weather. They've got select suites they want to fill.
“Truthfully, we are delighted where we are with rooms. Our accounts did go up a little yesterday. Maybe they would have gone up if the weather were perfect, but at this stage of the game, we're exceeding what we thought we would do at this time," said Michael C. Hoffman of the Hampton Inn and Suites.
And with the gaming season just beginning, everyone wants the wet weather to gallop out of town.
