At Peter B. Coeymans School, part of the Ravena Coeymans Selkirk School District, learning continues through the summer. But this isn't just another summer school class. It's considered an Adventure Reading Camp.
Summer Reading Teacher Denise Mulligan said, "We're calling it Adventure Reading Camp for the Summer. It's a six-week program and we have 20 kids from the RCS district."
Twenty kids, and also several volunteers, who are here to keep improve reading ability.
At Peter B. Coeymans School, part of the Ravena Coeymans Selkerk School District, learning continues through the summer. But this isn't just another summer school class. It's considered an Adventure Reading Camp.
Mulligan said, "We have a lot of volunteers, whether they're senior citizens, middle school and high school kids, they come for the morning so it's only 9 to 11:30 so it's an easy thing and the kids really like it."
The camp is also interactive. There are different stations where students can get involved on a more hands-on level. It all helps to keep the kids' minds active, which is important, especially this time of year.
Mulligan said, "We're interested in keeping the kids on reading level for the summer. They lose a lot of reading during the summer, some kids were just at grade level or just below grade level at the end of June so we want them to keep that and improve during the summer."
Volunteer Norman Fancher said, "We really need to keep them busy. If they don't keep busy, they lose what they learn when they get away from the school."
The Adventures in Reading program is included as part of a budget proposal approved by district residents. And with one-on-one interaction and participating in literacy games, it's a way of actually adding to what they learned during the regular school year.
Mulligan said, "It's all individualized so kids who don't like to pay attention and are having a hard time, they thrive on this."
A summer of learning for everyone.
