WASHINGTON -- The New York Times is defending its decision not to publish an op-ed article by John McCain on the Iraq war as submitted.
In an e-mail released by the McCain campaign, an op-ed editor at the newspaper says McCain would have to lay out specifics on troops and timetables and show how his policies on Iraq and Afghanistan meshed.

The newspaper says it's standard procedure to go back and forth with an author on his or her submission and that it looks forward to publishing McCain's views as it has several times in the past.
A McCain spokesman says McCain won't change his views to please The New York Times.
