NEW YORK STATE -- Governor David Paterson has signed a number of bills, many of them aimed at protecting the safety of New Yorkers.
Among the bills signed was an extension of Jonathan's Law. That law was set to expire at the end of last year. The law allows parents of mentally disabled kids access to their records.
The governor also signed a law that would revoke teaching licenses if a teacher is convicted of a sex crime.
Another bill that was on the table was that takes-on violent video games. Part of that bill that could become law as early as Wednesday. It would create an advisory council on interactive media and youth violence and violations of the new labeling and parental control provisions would carry fines.
Critics of the plan say the state's retail lobby has gutted the bill by cutting felony charges and prison sentences outlined in the original proposal.
