Second quarter financial filings submitted

A financial update now in the race to replace retiring Congressman Mike McNulty in the 21st Congressional District. Second quarter financial filings were due to the Federal Election Commission Tuesday.

Experts say that the general theory is some candidates will show significant money heading into the end of a campaign season, while others candidates may lose steam and will eventually drop out.

Important to remember is not all of the money in the candidates' coffers is raised from individual contributions. Some candidates have help from political action committees, or PACs. And some candidates have contributed thousands of dollars of their own money, which helps them compete with those who have raised more. But it can also also show a financial commitment to the campaign.

A financial update now in the race to replace retiring Congressman Mike McNulty in the 21st Congressional District. Second quarter financial filings were due to the Federal Election Commission Tuesday. Britt Godshalk has the details.
Democrat Tracey Brooks comes out on top this quarter with just over $380,000. That's about $200,000 more than last quarter, and $32,000 of that is from a PAC. She has contributed only $500 to her campaign.

Democrat Phil Steck, who had the most in his coffers last quarter with just over $200,000, now shows just under $330,000. Less than $3,000 of that is from a PAC. He has contributed $50,000 of his own money to his campaign.

This quarter is the first time we see numbers for Democrat Paul Tonko. He shows a total of just under $125,000. Of that, just over $33,000 is from a PAC. And he has contributed $3,000 of his own money.

Not too much financial movement in Democrat Darius Shahinfar's campaign. He reported just under $80,000 last quarter. This quarter he showed the same. Still no funds from a PAC, but this time he contributed another $25,000 from his own pocket.

Republican Jim Buhrmaster showed thousands more dollars in individual contributions this time around. Last quarter he reported just under $110,000, but this time he shows just over $225,000. Of that, just over $7,500 is from a PAC. And he's contributed the most to his own campaign, $100,000.

Democrat Joseph Sullivan and Republican Steven Vasquez did not report any numbers.

All of this information is available at the Federal Election Commission website at www.fec.gov. Next up, we await the certification of the primary ballot by the State Board of Elections on August 4th.
