Carwash benefits school kids

A local church is doing its part to help students go to school with all the supplies they need. The "We Are Good Ground Family Church" of Cohoes is holding a series of carwashes to fund their third annual backpack giveaway. The car wash is technically free, but they do ask for a donation.

The group is handed out backpacks to elementary students in the Cohoes, Waterford, and Green Island school districts. Inside, the kids will find all their essential school supplies.

"This year we're giving away 550 backpacks. Ten percent of those will go to military families who have a loved one deployed and we're going to do an appreciation dinner for them this year. August 23rd will be the backpack giveaway. Doors will open at 10:00, and it's first come, first served basis," said organizer Melissa Pulcher.

The group washed 63 cars, two of which were police cars and they even washed a fire truck.

A total of $325 was raised.
