Pyrotechnic prep

Tidings laid to rest
Hundreds of friends, family and fellow firefighters said their final goodbyes to Albany Deputy Fire Chief Dave Tidings. Tidings passed away earlier this week from complications due to cancer.

The cost of the coup
State senators are set to work through the holiday weekend and now it looks like they might not get paid for it either. Comptroller Tom DiNapoli announced Thursday he is going to withhold senators' pay checks, even as he's uncertain he has the authority to do it. But as DiNapoli goes to court to stop the Senate from, he says, taking taxpayer money, he's not alone. As Josh Robin reports, this political fight is giving way to a long legal one and you're picking up the tab.

Free health clinic needs funding
The Schenectady Free Health Clinic cares for more than 2,000 patients. You may remember back in 2007, then Governor Eliot Spitzer banned discretionary spending, cutting funds to the clinic. Assemblyman Jim Tedisco called the cut political retribution for his opposition to Spitzer's licenses for illegals plan. Funds were partially restored that year and almost fully restored the next. But this year, funds have again dried up. Our Britt Godshalk reports.
